Look out, boys and girls. Here come LA Guns! Again!
Founding member Tracii Guns has reunited with best known singer Phil Lewis. Their reunion spawned a schedule of reunion shows, then ultimately The Missing Peace, a collection of bruising, high octane classic-sounding hard rock/metal just released in October. From the full throttle lead single “Speed” to the classic 1989ish groove of “Don’t Bring a Knife to a Gunfight” — The Missing Peace is pure vintage L.A. Guns. Considering the band started 30 years ago, this is no mean feat.
They don’t sound tired. They don’t sound drained. If anything, LA Guns sounds like they are ready to rumble!
The Missing Peace captures the urgency of a band that is hungry to make their mark yet again. And a drive that hasn’t been in the band’s music since Waking The Dead. I was originally going to say that the band hasn’t sounded this urgent since Cocked and Loaded, but Waking The Dead is when the band woke up for a second time. You might say that The Missing Peace is their third incarnation. Yes – a few good albums were released during the years Tracii Guns was out on his own. But that’s just it – the were good, but kept to a formula. The Missing Peace has more edge.
As mentioned before, “Speed” which was our first taste of the reunited Guns/Lewis, with an official video being released in Spring 2017. It’s a shame that when I saw the band – featuring Guns, Lewis, Shane Fitzgibbon on drums, guitar player Michael Grant and bassist Johnny Martin – that the album was not formerly released. Although the album has had very good sales since coming out, The Missing Peace would have sold quite bit at the merchandise table. The timing of its release and scheduling of the reunion dates should have been coordinated a little more carefully, but if that’s the worst thing we can say, then that’ a GREAT thing. And who knows? Maybe there was an unforeseen issue on the production end. Things happen. That’s rock n’roll. Instead of cancelling or rescheduling dates, the LA Guns Guns/Lewis reunion rolled on!
The spirit of LA Guns is truly back, and while Mick Cripps and Kelly Nickels are surely missed, the new guys fill in more than admirably. If you have the first trio of LA Guns albums in your collection, The Missing Peace fits right in.
With more worldwide reunion dates scheduled for 2018, it appears this version of LA Guns is here to stay.
